Best Mobile Innovation supporting Emergency or Humanitarian Situations

Ericsson & UN World Food Programme for Ericsson Response (Caribbean 2017)

The judges said – “This shows the massive difference it makes when technology companies and their employees put their skills, tech and money to good use. It’s a taste of how the world could be if other tech companies followed this example.”

Ericsson Response was founded in April 2000 when Ericsson employees wanted to contribute their expertise during disaster relief operations. Since then, hundreds of Ericsson employee volunteers have been deployed to support over 40 humanitarian relief efforts in more than 30 countries. In September 2017, the Caribbean region was hit by two category-5 hurricanes – Irma and Maria. In Dominica thousands of people were affected and the infrastructure was heavily damaged, with severe Internet service and mobile network disruptions. Ericsson Response and the World Food Programme/ETC partners were deployed to address the emergency telecommunications needs in Dominica 2 days following Hurricane Maria.
